What is the Amended Senior Certificate?

The Amended Senior Certificate (ASC) is a qualification equivalent to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) of South Africa. It is a qualification designed specifically for individuals who did not complete their high school education and wish to obtain a recognized qualification. The ASC was introduced as a replacement for the Senior Certificate, which was phased out in 2008.

How to Register for the ASC

The first step towards obtaining your ASC is to register with the Department of Basic Education or your provincial education department. You can register at any time of the year, but it is recommended to register early to give yourself ample time to prepare for your exams.

To register for the ASC, you need to:

  • Be 21 years or older
  • Provide a valid ID document or passport
  • Provide any previous academic records
  • Pay the required registration fee

Registration Fees

The registration fee for the ASC varies depending on the number of subjects you wish to write. The current fee is R250 per subject. You can pay the fee at your provincial department of education or via EFT.

Preparing for Your Exams

Once you have registered for the ASC, it's time to start preparing for your exams. The ASC exams are offered in two sessions, May/June and October/November. It is recommended to start studying at least six months before your exam date to give yourself enough time to prepare.
